Field Notes

Overview

Field notes are quick-capture tools for recording observations, reflections, and contextual details during fieldwork. FieldSocio supports both text and audio notes.

Creating Field Notes

  1. From your project, tap Field Notes
  2. Tap New Note
  3. Choose your note type:

Text Notes

Write observations directly in the app. Supports:

  • Free-form text entry
  • Optional location tagging
  • Photo attachments
  • Tags for categorization

Audio Notes

Record voice memos for situations where typing isn’t practical:

  • Quick audio capture with one tap
  • Automatic transcription (when online)
  • Ideal for recording observations while walking or during events

Organizing Notes

  • Tags — Add custom tags to categorize notes
  • Search — Full-text search across all notes
  • Timeline — View notes chronologically
  • Filter — Filter by tag, date range, or type

Best Practices

  • Write field notes as soon as possible after observations
  • Include sensory details — sounds, smells, atmosphere
  • Separate observations from interpretations
  • Use tags consistently across the project
  • Record reflexive notes about your own positionality
